The short answer: yes, Turnitin detects Claude
If you paste raw Claude output into a Turnitin submission, it will almost certainly get flagged as AI-generated. Turnitin's AI detection model is a neural classifier — it analyzes token probability distributions, not just surface-level patterns. And Claude's output, like all LLM text, has a detectable statistical fingerprint.

Our test
We generated five different essays using Claude (Sonnet), each 500-800 words across different subjects:
- A political science essay on democratic backsliding
- A literature analysis of The Great Gatsby
- A biology paper on CRISPR gene editing
- A business case study on market entry strategy
- A philosophy essay on the trolley problem
Raw Claude output results
All five essays were flagged by Turnitin's AI detection with high confidence. This isn't surprising — Turnitin's neural model is specifically trained to identify LLM-generated text, and Claude's outputs share the same statistical characteristics as other models.
For comparison, we also ran the same essays through other detectors:
- GPTZero: Flagged all five as AI-generated
- ZeroGPT: Flagged four of five (scores ranged from 65-92% AI)
- Sapling: Flagged all five with high "fake" probability
Does the Claude model matter?
We tested both Claude Haiku and Claude Sonnet. Both get caught. The model being "smarter" doesn't make it less detectable — all transformer-based language models produce text with similar statistical distributions that neural detectors pick up on.
What about prompting tricks?
We tried several common approaches people recommend online:
"Write like a human" prompts — Adding instructions like "write naturally" or "avoid AI-sounding language" made no measurable difference on Turnitin's detector. The neural classifier sees through surface-level style changes. Persona prompts — "Write as a college sophomore who's tired and rushing" produced more casual text but still got flagged. The vocabulary and sentence structure shift, but the underlying probability distribution doesn't. Temperature manipulation — Even with maximum randomness settings, the output remained detectable. For heuristic detectors (ZeroGPT, Sapling)

This is harder. No API-based tool on the market reliably beats neural classifiers. The fundamental issue is that all LLM outputs — regardless of prompting strategy — have detectable token probability distributions. Paraphrasing, rewording, and even cross-model rewriting don't change this enough to fool a trained neural model.
What does work:
- Significant manual rewriting — using AI as a draft, then substantially rewriting in your own words
- AI as outline only — generating structure and ideas from AI, writing the actual text yourself
- Blending — writing most of the text yourself and using AI only for specific sentences or paragraphs
The honest take
If your school uses Turnitin's AI detection and you submit raw Claude output, you will likely get flagged. That's true for ChatGPT, Gemini, and every other LLM too.
